Last night at the Macon County Board of Education meeting, Miss Hailey Brown, a student at Macon Early College, was recognized for being selected for the NC Flight Crew.
She has been selected as one of three representatives from western North Carolina and she is one out of the 11 girls selected for the 2024 NC Flight Crew in the state which is part of the National Million Girls Moonshot program. This program is part of the NC Center for Afterschool Programs and is sponsored through our Smoky Mountain STEM Collaborative grant through SCC and NASA.
As part of this program, Randi Neff with the Smoky Mountain STEM Collaborative and I will be working with Hailey over the next year to create an afterschool STEM event in the Spring and a summer program this coming summer.
Hailey has been a member of the Macon Bots robotics program for several years and is also working with another Macon Early College student to start an Astronomy Club at the school. We recently had the opportunity to attend the Synergy Conference in Chapel Hill where she was honored with the other students as part of the inaugural NC Flight Crew.
